Publisher Description

In 1989 Ken Follett astonished the literary world with The Pillars of the Earth, a sweeping epic novel set in twelfth-century England centered on the building of a cathedral and many of the hundreds of lives it affected. Critics were overwhelmed—“it will hold you, fascinate you, surround you” (Chicago Tribune)—and readers everywhere hoped for a sequel.

World Without End takes place in the same town of Kingsbridge, two centuries after the townspeople finished building the exquisite Gothic cathedral that was at the heart of The Pillars of the Earth. The cathedral and the priory are again at the center of a web of love and hate, greed and pride, ambition and revenge, but this sequel stands on its own. This time the men and women of an extraordinary cast of characters find themselves at a crossroad of new ideas— about medicine, commerce, architecture, and justice. In a world where proponents of the old ways fiercely battle those with progressive minds, the intrigue and tension quickly reach a boiling point against the devastating backdrop of the greatest natural disaster ever to strike the human race—the Black Death.

Three years in the writing, and nearly eighteen years since its predecessor, World Without End breathes new life into the epic historical novel and once again shows that Ken Follett is a masterful author writing at the top of his craft.

I loved this book!

This was one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read. I love to read(listen) to a book which blends history and fiction together so well. My only regret is that iTunes does not offer the Unabridged version of the sequel "World Without End". This will force me to go to to buy the Unabridged version, which they do carry. When I wrote Apple and asked them if they could carry it they replied "it is not available at this time". In any case, I recommend Ken Follett, this outstanding book, and I plan to order the sequel later today when I return from the gym(enjoying the Mitch Rapp series..."Consent to Kill"). Thanks iTunes for the many books you have carried for my past enjoyment...I've bought more than 70.

World Without End

I was eagerly anticipating listening to this audiobook after Mr. Follett's earlier, wonderful Pillars of the Earth audiobook. Unfortunately, the World Without End audiobook was only available in an abridged version, and the abridgement is jarring and disjointed, making the story threads difficult to follow and frustrating to listen to. It is a disservice to this wonderful book with its complex plotting and multiple story lines. It is rare that I feel the need to obtain a paper copy of a book to "reread" it after listening to an audiobook, but I am doing so with this audiobook. My advice: try to find an unabridged version, or read the book.

World Without End

There are so many characters in this book that it is difficult to keep them all straight while listening, so I purchased the book in order to read it concurrently. Once I realized how very abridged the story is, I was very disappointed. Entire sections of the book are left out of the recorded version. I have no desire to listen to the remainder of the audiobook. I will never purchase another abridged recording... very disappointing!
