When was the last time you listened to someone, or someone really listened to you?
At work, we’re taught to lead the conversation.
On social media, we shape our personal narratives.
At parties, we talk over one another. So do our politicians.
We’re not listening.
And no one is listening to us.
Despite living in a world where technology allows constant digital communication and opportunities to connect, it seems no one is really listening or even knows how. And it’s making us lonelier, more isolated, and less tolerant than ever before. A listener by trade, New York Times contributor Kate Murphy wanted to know how we got here.
In this always illuminating and often humorous deep dive, Murphy explains why we’re not listening, what it’s doing to us, and how we can reverse the trend. She makes accessible the psychology, neuroscience, and sociology of listening while also introducing us to some of the best listeners out there (including a CIA agent, focus group moderator, bartender, radio producer, and top furniture salesman). Equal parts cultural observation, scientific exploration, and rousing call to action that's full of practical advice, You're Not Listening is to listening what Susan Cain's Quiet was to introversion. It’s time to stop talking and start listening.
"An essential book for our times." - Lori Gottlieb, New York Times bestselling author of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone
Customer Reviews
This is an awesome book
This book is amazing and it shows you what you miss out on in everyday life.
And how important it really is to talk to people and pay attention to people even when you feel ... uncomfortable or fear while doing it....
It shows you that we neglect each other and then wonder why so much happens.
I think if you want to have meaningful relationships you should read this book.
Very eye opening
I don’t generally do nonfiction, so I’m going to keep this review kinda brief. It isn’t something I would generally pick up, but it is something I needed to pick up. I’m the type of person who will spend hours on the phone with people while doing something else, I’m not a good listener and I’m very aware of that. This book was very eye opening as to why it’s important that I change those habits.
You’re not listening is very hard hitting on society as a whole. There are few people I would point out in my life that I feel actually listen to me. It’s worth every person picking up this book just to understand the importance of conversation.
Kate Murphy used hard facts, interviews, and statements to break through the world. I hope everyone picks up this book and actually listens to what she says.
