I believe you should standardize a starting point. But each image is unique and should be treated as such. Diagrams and back stories were very beneficial.
Author does give good advise in keep it simple and master that. Expand on mastery and read all you can.

I enjoyed the book very much it was very informative and I thought the average photographer could definitely learn something from the book. I would definitely recommend the book to any one interested in learning more on flash photography.
