130 Chicken Nuggets

… Heartbreak is hoping you dream about someone
despite knowing how much it’ll hurt when you wake up.
You do everything in your power to hear their voice again—
to feel them again—
even if it’s all an illusion …

Everyone remembers the first time they fell in love and had their heart broken—it is a life-altering experience.

Mercedez Fernandez conveys the complexity and fullness of romantic heartbreak through words that are raw, real, and relatable. As Mercedez poetically moves through her journey, it becomes evident that her verse is about much more than just lost love. It is about growth, transformation, and existing loudly—despite our challenges.

130 Chicken Nuggets is a poem told in black and white as a teen reflects on all the emotions that accompany a broken heart.
