6th Grade Math Study Guide

Sixth grade is the year mathematics steps sideways into a bigger world — the world of ratios, of negative numbers, and of the four-quadrant plane — and Zoe and Max step into middle school with Pip, Grandma Rose, and cousin Leo alongside. Across twenty-two chapters, this read-aloud guide covers the complete Common Core standard: ratios, rates, unit rates, and percent as a ratio out of 100; dividing any fraction by any fraction; extending the number line into the negatives and plotting on all four quadrants of the coordinate plane; writing, reading, and evaluating expressions with variables; solving one-variable equations and inequalities; the area of triangles, parallelograms, and quadrilaterals by decomposition; surface area and volume of prisms (including fractional edge lengths); and a first serious pass at statistics with mean, median, mode, range, box plots, and dot plots. Optional "Around the World Challenges" from China, Singapore, and Israel push into two-step equations, unit-rate speed problems, and early number-theory puzzles. The two marquee "Story Corners" are the 3,000-year hunt for a mathematics of debt — the invention of negative numbers in Han-dynasty China (the Nine Chapters with red and black counting rods), Brahmagupta's rules for zero and negatives in 628 CE, and Europe's centuries of stubborn refusal until Descartes made the number line two-way — and the birth of algebra itself in ninth-century Baghdad, where al-Khwarizmi wrote Kitāb al-jabr and gave "algebra" its name, its notation, and its first six standard equations. Complete practice with full answer keys. A read-aloud math book that teaches not just how, but why. Book six of the Zoe & Max grades 1–12 math series.
