Publisher Description

8-Track Flashbacks is a collection of amusing stories based on the life of an adolescent boy growing up in the 1960s. It transports boomers back to their youth through music, historical events, and the all-too-familiar teenage indiscretions that shaped us all. Each one of us has our favorite decade from our past, and author Tom Alt reveals his story about growing up and getting out of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin in the 1960s -- a decade of causes from civil rights to the anti-war movement to making love, not war. Tom’s personal cause, the pursuit of balls, babes, and beer, offers the reader a glimpse into the hilarious high jinks of this boy’s adolescence. Share his adventures as he searches for his place in the world while surviving the stupidity of his youth.

The Soundtrack of Your Life: Blue Ink Reviews

Those oldies stations that proclaim their music "the soundtrack of your life" are just shoveling the usual radio hype. But for Tom Alt, the music of his youth, the music of the tumultuous 1960s, is not only on his ipod, but in his soul. It formed him as much as family, friends, or teachers.

High school adventures. Dating disasters. Troubles at home. Procuring that illicit case of Old Milwaukee. "8-Track Flashbacks is an easy, enjoyable read. Alt's writing style is smooth, at times funny, at times serious and reflective.

He gets to the heart of things.

Fantastic book but too short

Having grown up in "The Falls" exactly ten years later, Tom's book spoke to me on many levels. My siblings (who were closer to Tom's age) graciously included me in many of their escapades so I particularly enjoyed his stories about some of the landmarks in our little town. But his illustration of the transition from boyhood to manhood is universal and should resonate with every male from that generation who grew up in a small town. I am grateful to Miss K for igniting your passion for writing because without her we wouldn't have been able to enjoy your gift. If there is anything you could've improved upon it would be the length of the book. It was just too short and left me wanting more (sort of like when my dad would take me to Tiemann's Bakery "uptown" and only buy me one donut). Maybe that's what good authors do but I just wasn't ready for the epilogue. Maybe a sequel is in our future? Maybe a collaborative effort of a collection of stories from your readers? But we want more Tom! We want that second donut. Or that extra large chocolate malt at Strom's. Well, you get my point. Thank you for graciously including us in some of your escapades.

Groovin Through the 60s by Cheri Richardson

I loved this book, it took me directly back in time to my own Wisconsin childhood. Tom has created a warm and entertaining journey, peppered with out-loud laughter and memorable sighs. Everyone will find something to relate to as he shares the challenges and triumphs of growing up, referencing fabulous music and sports moments of the 1960's. It's impossible not to travel with him through ones own memories, feeling both the elation and the pains that he describes as he makes decisions good and bad and deals with their consequences. I wanted the story to continue on into the 70's!
