Publisher Description

From the New York Times bestselling author of Inheritance and host of the hit podcast Family Secrets—“a bona fide page turner” (The New York Times Book Review) about the mysteries of teenage pain and family crisis.

Rachel Jensen is perfectly happy: in love with her husband, devoted to their daughter Kate, gratified by her work restoring art. And finally, she’s pregnant again. But as Rachel discovers, perfection can unravel in an instant. The summer she is thirteen, Kate returns from camp sullen, angry, and withdrawn. Everyone assures Rachel it’s typical adolescent angst. But then Kate has a terrifying accident with her infant brother, and the ensuing guilt brings forth a dreadful lie—one that ruptures their family, perhaps irrevocably.

Family history..great read

First time book from this author...very pleased! I am not a big reader : ( just don't have the time or attention span! But this book kept my attention! Not a long drawn out book..just interesting and good!

Such a let down.

The book begins with such promise, but ultimately crashes and burns. It’s an uncomfortable read, in that the main character, mom, Rachel Jensen, is never developed, and lacks any depth. Poor Rachel spends the majority of the book essentially flailing her arms in bizarre desperation after her daughter Kate begins a slow decline in her mental health. After a tragic accident involving her baby brother, Kate makes an outcry against her father, accusing him of having abused her. The accusation is handled with zero seriousness, and the total lack of nuance makes you wonder why the author would even touch on the subject.
