Marc Lewis's relationship with drugs began in a New England boarding school where, as a bullied and homesick fifteen-year-old, he made brief escapes from reality by way of cough medicine, alcohol, and marijuana. His picaresque narrative recounts a lavish drug history: booze, cough syrup and pot at boarding school; LSD during his Vietnam-era college days at Berkeley; intermittent addictions to heroin and prescription opiates that led to pharmacy break-ins and arrest; a laughing-gas party in the Malaysian jungle. Amazing
Great read and insight into one’s addicted mind. Sometimes the science, while amazing, was a little tough to follow and understand but it all worked out.
Insightful But Cringeworthy at Times
There is much helpful insight in this candid memoir. The author’s lack of personal responsibility evident through much of the book is probably characteristic of many active addicts. But overall there is a message of hope and possibility. Definitely worth the read.
