From a review by the HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER, Grady Harp

The real pleasure of jumping into this mystery is the manner in which Richard Houston writes. Think Garrison Keillor's `A Prairie Home Companion', a dab of Mark Twain, and a dollop of John Grisham - marinate out in nature, and out comes Houston's style. Not bad ingredients for an author on the rise.

Jake Martin is not your ordinary sleuth. He's an ordinary guy with an extraordinary dog. This time the story takes place in the foothills of Denver. Jake is accused of manslaughter and he has to prove the accident was really murder. Along the way he encounters a poaching ring and falls in love with a beautiful game warden.

Very well written

When you combine murder, a dog, and a little romance you always having a winning book. This book combines all three elements in a well written mystery.

A Book to Die For (Book #2)

This is the third book in this series I have read. Already read Books #1 and #3 and loved them. This story is every bit as good. I am a dog lover so that enhances the story for me. I have downloaded Book #4 and am anxious to get started on it. I highly recommend Richard Houston as he really develops the characters, and I like that some of them continue from story to story.

A Book to Die For

The second of the series, I have to say thanks to the author for not including the character of protagonist’s mother. Not because she was such a self serving woman, which she definitely was, but because her son was unrealistically choir boy perfect in his meekness. In this book, however, he was subservient to his needy neighbor, so maybe I’m getting impatient with him constantly being put upon. These stories are so well written, nevertheless, I must beg the author to pleeeese let Jake have some respect, say, in the form of a well-paying job and community appreciation! Or hey! how about a great sidekick who always has his back?!
