An interesting and original story line. It had it's moments.
I like the slow building of friendship and trust in this story. Aside from the fact that Declan is her therapist I do not see any problems with the ways he is trying to break Megan out of her shell. Megan's fear of intimacy is quite a challenge to concur and it helps to have a friend you can trust.
Declan keeps using the reasoning that the extra time away from the office setting is actual therapy in helping Megan open up to him. Declan is having a hard time separating his personal and professional feelings for Megan.
Together they are therapeutic for each other. I like the way they help heal each other. Both gaining something from this experience.
Declan has a heavy burden to carry. Declan has escaped death twice. Declan seems to not feel worthy of the life he was given. His brother and army friend had more to gain by living. Declan feels like it should have been him who died and not them.
Declan was faced with a difficult and life changing family dynamic. He hit a downward spiral after his brother died.
It's a story about how people cope with trauma that occurs to them in life. Some people fall into drugs and alcohol. Some get mixed up with the wrong people. Some fight. Some become hermits and become anti-social. There are many ways people try to fight through the pain, but the best way is to seek help.
Then the brutal betrayal is unveiled and what an interesting twist it is. It's not so black and white and definitely one up for debate, maybe even judgement. Everyone forgives differently and in this case of the story who am I to state differently.
