A Failed State

I read this book for the first time two years ago, and was engaged in this outstanding story told by a man who has truly “been there and done that” time and again. But while I recognized the difficulty being faced by the primary character Damien in terms of coping with the damage the job was doing to his family, that plot line was part of the landscape in my mind. I truly felt that the book was worth reading for everything it was. But as I read this book again, I recognize even more acutely that the true story is the cost of such protection to both those who go into harms way, lose friends, make decisions whose outcomes may haunt them for the rest of their lives, and have to cope in a chaotic environment where death and darkness is a constant companion, but also to the families of those individuals, who arguably pay a higher cost. This cost is recognized by very, very few in our country and understood by even fewer. As I enter the ranks of those who have paid such prices, I would say to my brothers and sisters who find themselves here, read this book. And re-read it. Recognize that there are many who know firsthand what you are dealing with. Life is painful and things do not always work out the way we want. Costs add up, often without our notice, but at some point things get beyond repair and finding a way back seems impossible. Reach out to someone who understands. After 20 years of war, there are many around who do. I want to thank Mr. Coussens personally for his courage not just in his job but in opening his life up to as public scrutiny as possible given the circumstances with the intent of helping others who carry the same weight he does. Never above you, never below you, always beside you.

This book was captivating from the first line! A great mix of action and with drama. I couldn’t put it down and can’t wait until the next one comes out!
