Cute Illustrations, But Overall I’d Skip It
My three year old selected this book for me to read to her as a bedtime story, based on the cover and title. However, upon completion, we both agreed we were very underwhelmed by the “plot”.
**I do think that my child and I also just aren’t the target demographic, and that this book is primarily meant for school-aged readers (pre-k and up) to be used as an educational resource of sorts.**
But (and it’s a big but), I’ve also read and/or perused a good deal of other first reader type books, which (while still simplistic) actually had some semblance of cohesiveness, a plot, and were easy to follow (not just easy to read), demonstrating it is possible for a book of this nature to be both instructional and engaging.
Sadly, in this case, the author just seemed to throw in a smattering of simple rhyming words, add a few relevant illustrations, and call it a day. It was disjointed and confusing, and I fear it will be a “one and done” for me and my child.
Maybe if the book had a more specific description labeling it as a “first reader” meant as an adjunct learning tool for children to practice reading independently and recognizing rhyming words, its rating would improve. Maybe not.
The only upside is that it was free, so the only thing you’re really wasting is time (and very little of it at that) if your child ends up not liking it.
