Along the way, the reader will discover reasons to trust that money and possessions can't buy happiness or forgiveness, nor permit us to escape the consequences of our choices. The story emphasizes the message that real meaning is found in the relationships we nurture and in living our lives in obedience to God.

A Gathering of Finches
If you don't already love North Bend and Coos Bay Oregon, you will after reading this book. Along with this book, one must plan a trip to Shore Acres, a garden of beauty beside a breath taking wild ocean. The remnants of the grand estate which stand as a witness of the love and dedication of it's creators, who so wonderfully come to life in this book.
Jane Kirkpatrick brings to life a family of love, tenacity, courage, good and bad decisions and amazing accomplishments of the late 1800's and early 1900's. Her beautifully detailed descriptions of the clothing, jewelry, hats and accessories that adorned her characters and their personalities, create a fertile ground for the imagination to grow to love and respect this family and their friends.
Smiles and tears accompany the journey through this book along with personal insights that inspire. One grows wiser through the chapters of this heartfelt story.
I recognized names of streets that remain to honor this family who were builders with vision. I own a house on Flanagan Ave. which now takes on special meaning after getting aquatinted with the Flanagans as they appeared in this book, along with many other familiar names of places in Coos County. I've purchased two cars from the dealership that was started by the Simpson's contemporaries, whose posterity still live in the area as I was taught in this book.
I was fascinated with the San Francisco connection and can see it in the architecture of the old buildings.
Reading this book caused my heart to expand with love and appreciation for North Bend and Coos Bay, two towns which rivalry continues today as it did back then.
What a great honor the writing of this book brings to those who dedicated their lives to the development of Coos County.
Read and enjoy this book.
