Three women scholars. Three lives changed. And a dash of romance.

Blessing in Disguise by Sarah M. Eden
1858, Dublin
Fred Fitzsimmons will soon graduate Trinity College. With only a few weeks, he must continue safeguarding the enormous secret he's been keeping throughout his time in Dublin: that he is actually Winnifred, a woman in disguise. The medical degree she is a breath away from claiming would allow her to save her beloved village. But having her secret revealed would land her in jail. So when Liam Rafferty, a fellow student with a reputation for unravelling even the most complicated of mysteries, grows suspicious of "Fred," more lives than merely hers hang in the balance.

An Unexpected Education by Michele Paige Holmes
Nineteen-year-old Esther Sessions has survived the slums of Liverpool, and her abusive home, by holding onto a promise she made to her dying mother long ago--to keep reading. When a factory explosion frees her from her oppressive life and provides an opportunity to attend Bedford Women's College in London, Esther determines to succeed at school, knowing her education will ensure a future in which she might provide for herself and never be dependent upon any man. From the first moments of her arrival, Professor John Lind begins challenging her beliefs about everything from classical literature to algebra to--men. His kindness is something she has never encountered in a man before, and the generosity of his heart might just reach through the barriers surrounding Esther's.

Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen
Ellie Perkins has achieved her dream of establishing her own Kindergarten school to serve the needs of Liverpool's orphans. As a woman who has graduated from college and pursued a career, she has faced opposition and contention from all sides. Her first year is a success, however, and as she begins the second, she is caught by surprise when her newest hire marries and moves away, leaving a class of orphans without a teacher. Solicitor Graham Lucas, meanwhile, appears on her school doorstep, having narrowed a search for his employer's heir to one of the students in the now teacher-less class. Ellie sees a temporary fix to her problem that will benefit both her and the handsome solicitor. Graham will substitute the kindergarten class, while Ellie searches for a replacement. Unbeknownst to them all, however, is the lurking presence of a jealous relative who covets the young heir's position, and who will stop at nothing to take his place. Also at risk is Ellie's heart and hard-won career. Can she truly take a chance on a handsome substitute teacher bent on winning her love?

Blessing in Disguise by Sarah M. Eden
Dr. Poole from the school of medicine, and Rev. MacDonnell, the provost, tasks Liam with uncovering the puzzle that is Fred, a student about to graduate as a medical doctor. They wanted him to find out what it was that made Fred peculiar. They did not want anyone untoward graduating from their prestigious school. What Liam found out was Fred was not the person he claimed to be. His sister Winnie was living in the same apartment as Fred when Liam knocked on her door. Liam attempted to find out about Fred through her. He very much enjoyed Winnie’s company and found he was falling in love with her. He finally realizes that Winnie and Fred are one and the same. Winnie had so desperately wanted to become a doctor but at this period of time it was not allowed for women to do so. However, the small town where Winnie was from needed a doctor badly, but because of the shortage of men due to the Crimean War and Winnie’s desire to be a doctor, the town paid for her tuition and room for the full four years until she graduated. Fred was in a conundrum as to what to tell Dr. Poole. He did not want to give Winnie away but at the same time he didn’t want to be deceitful either. The solution to his dilemma eventually was a very clever one which allowed Winnie/Fred to graduate and earn her doctorate. I loved the way these two got together eventually, another one of Liam’s very clever solutions.

An Unexpected Education by Michele Paige Holmes
I absolutely loved this story! I appreciated the slow burn ... I guess it wasn’t quite a romance yet as Professor Lind was a teacher at the school where Lady Parker sponsored Esther to complete her education. What little Esther was taught to read was at the hands of her dying mother when she was quite young. Her father was a drunk abuser and taught her older brother to abuse as well. They both were killed in an explosion at the mill where they worked while Esther found herself homeless. Lady Parker hired Esther and gave her a home after learning her excellent seamstress skills. She became like a mother to Esther and Esther like a daughter to her. Lady Parker sponsored Esther at Bedford College to gain an education as a lady so that she would not have to depend upon any man to support her. It was at Bedford that she became acquainted with Professor Lind, a gentle and thoughtful soul. They shared a mutual love for all things literature. Professor Lind was able to see inside Esther’s heart while reading her essays and likewise Esther was inspired by him.

Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen
Graham was unexpectedly pulled into a kindergarten classroom to stand in as a substitute due to the last minute notice of the previous teacher. Miss Perkins was the founder of the school and caught him off guard in desperation. Graham had approached her to try to find the previously unknown child of his deceased friend. One afternoon turned into a few weeks and Graham was finding he loved being a kindergarten teacher. He also found he loved the school mistress. A tragedy struck one night as the local orphanage which housed the small students was on fire. Oh my poor heart went out to them. I could not help but get chocked up over it. But all’s well that ends well and this story found the young heir and Graham and Miss Perkins found each other.

I so enjoyed each one of these stories, masterful story tellers all. I can easily guarantee that if you love historical romance that you will fall in love among the pages of these stories.
