The great Gingerbread Dog & Cat House competition has come to Wagtail, along with another murder to solve for Holly and her supersmart Jack Russell terrier Trixie in the New York Times bestselling Paws & Claws series by Krista Davis!
Visitors are arriving in droves to spend Thanksgiving in the mountains of pet-friendly Wagtail, Virginia. Many of them are bringing dog and cat gingerbread houses to enter in the contest that will be held in the new convention center. Wagtail resident Orly Biffle bequeathed the land to the town in his will, provided that they not cut down the grand old oak tree on the property. Orly’s children are mighty miffed that they didn’t inherit the prime piece of property overlooking the lake.
Holly notices that Trixie and Twinkletoes, her calico kitty, are fixated on the big oak tree. Trixie barks at it as though she thinks it’s a corpse! Just as contestants are spicing up their sweet gingerbread creations, the majestic tree drops an enormous limb. The mayor declares that the tree is dangerous and must come down. When a bulldozer churns up some roots, the tree falls over on its own accord revealing a body inside the trunk! Initially, everyone suspects this unsavory trick was Orly’s doing. But it soon becomes clear that someone is trying to keep the truth under wraps. Trixie and Twinkletoes now have to help Holly sniff out some suspects and leash a conniving killer.
The best in the series!
First off, this is truly my favorite cozy mystery series of all time. I’ve read quite a few and nothing brings me the same joy as heading back to Wagtail for a new exciting mystery! I accidentally stumbled upon the first book when it was brand new and I was hooked immediately. I’m not one to constantly check to see if an author has come out with a new book, but I definitely do with this series and have not-so- patiently awaited each new book! Sometimes cozy mysteries can be very G rated and the characters are these not normal, perfect angels. Basically, to the point of not being realistic at all. This book along with the rest is very realistic without going too far( for example the characters will have a drink occasionally or someone had an affair when they were younger ). Nothing over the top but just enough to make them seem like real people with flaws, not these over the top perfect humans who have never been angry before or haven’t made a real mistake.
This book is my favorite in the series. Trixie’s little guide for helping your human solve a murder throughout the book was adorable! Nell immediately became one of my favorite characters and I hope we get to see more of her and Holly together in the coming books. I do not mind being able to figure out the killer before the book reveals them, but this one definitely had me on my toes the entire time. I genuinely wasn’t a hundred percent sure what was going on till right before it was figured out. I’ve always enjoyed in this series how there are several mysteries that are seemingly not connected, yet eventually are and this book didn’t disappoint. Had a great night in reading this with my pup next to me cozied up on the couch. This series brings me a lot of comfort in times of stress. Can’t wait for the next one!
My favorite series hands down. Cannot wait for the next one!
