This is the story of an American family from its founding in the aftermath of the Civil War to the mid-twentieth century. Tom Pascoe, a former Union soldier, journeys south to Virginia and meets the spirited Laura Beth Travis who will become his wife. Their sons are Lee, named after one of America's greatest generals who was briefly Tom's friend, and Henry, a pioneer of gay pride 70 years before the term was invented. After Lee's brutal murder by the Ku Klux Klan, Henry raises his daughters, Lizzie and Harriet, as his own. His eccentrically religious lover, Cal McCarthy, becomes Lizzie's dearest friend and eventually a mentor to her three sons. Lizzie lives to take part in the first Gay Pride March in New York as an old lady, honouring that good inheritance of integrity and courage which has distinguished her family for four generations.
