Ice cream shop owner Bronwyn Crewse is in for two scoops of murder in this charming mystery from Abby Collette.
Chagrin Falls, Ohio, is gorgeous in the fall, and Bronwyn Crewse, owner of Crewse Creamery, knows just how to welcome the new season. At the annual Harvest Time Festival, residents will get a chance to enjoy hot-air balloons and hayrides, crown a new Harvest Time Festival Queen, and eat delicious frozen treats sold at Win’s freshly purchased ice cream truck. But she gets into a sprinkle of trouble when a festivalgoer is poisoned and Win is implicated.
Although the victim was a former Harvest Time Festival Queen, her once-sunny disposition had dimmed into bitterness, leaving no shortage of suspects at the festival. To clear her name before the chill of winter sets in, Win will have to investigate and hope that her detective skills won’t “dessert” her.
In Collette's delectable third Ice Cream Parlor mystery (after 2021's A Game of Cones), business is booming since Bronwyn "Win" Crewse took over Crewse Creamery, the ice cream parlor her family has owned for decades in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Win is sure the 75th annual Harvest Time Festival is the perfect venue to unveil the creamery's newly acquired ice cream truck, and she's thrilled when Kaitlyn Toles, an egotistical and rather unpleasant reporter for the local TV station and Win's onetime high school nemesis, wants to film a short news feature about Win's new venture. But when Kaitlyn dies at the festival, apparently poisoned after filming Win's TV spot, Kaitlyn's grief-stricken boyfriend begs Win to help him find out who killed her. Besides a picturesque setting and a cast of appealing secondary characters, Collette has created a truly original protagonist in Win, the proprietor of the town's first Black-owned business and the world's most reluctant investigator. Readers will want to see a lot more of the tenderhearted Win.
Throughly enjoyed the third installment of this series. It had me in the beginning and Ms. Collette had me guessing who did it the entire time!
I will say that I didn’t care for the beginning as I felt as if we were getting all this new back story for Wyn that seemed to come out of nowhere. No mention of most of the characters she’s known for years in either of the previous 2 books.
Overall a great read and I have already recommended this series to a work friend!
