Publisher Description
Arik used to live in Vroorttown, a boisterous factory territory where he helped build huge steam engines.
He used to live there, but not anymore. He fled because he caused a horrible accident and remaining in Vroorttown would mean certain death.
For months Arik avoided capture by going ever deeper in a huge forest where he vowed to set up a tiny camp and stay lost forever. Finally, he feels safe.
Then a woman chances upon his camp.
The encounter triggers a series of events that not only reveals her as a Mancer, a race that Arik fears and hates; but forces them to flee the forest together and enter an unexplored wasteland.
There’s no going back for either of them.
Now, Arik must decide whether to stay with the hated invader to find a way out of the wasteland together, or leave her there and take his chances alone.
Customer Reviews
Recommend, Great Book
Great book, great world-building, interesting characters, and a great example of show-don’t-tell in a rich, science-fiction world.
When does the sequel come out?
A good start
Congratulations on the award. And a first creative publication. It is more than I have done. I read your story, and have a couple of comments. I enjoyed how you were able to construct a compelling alien world in the breadth of just a short story, and I enjoyed your creative use of invented words "steamadore" etc. That said, in doing such a fine job world building within the story itself, the prologue felt like some superfluous narration, and could be eliminated. I like how you maintain the mystery of mancers and where they came from - hinting that they may be a more advanced predecessor race - without spelling it out explicitly. I look forward to future creations.
