Publisher Description

Jonathan Swift (1667 – 1745) was an Irish writer, poet and cleric who gained reputation as a great political writer and an essayist. Best known for writing Gulliver's Travels, he is regarded as the foremost prose satirist in the English language. Besides the famous novel, he wrote short stories as well. “A Modest Proposal” is one of them.

This pessimistic, but satirical story was published in 1729. The author very seriously paints the plight of impoverished Irishmen. Swift suggests that the poor Irish might ease their economic troubles by selling their children as food for rich gentlemen and ladies. This hyperbolic proposal made by J. Swift for combating poverty and overpopulation is as simple as ingenious.
