A Reason to Get Up in the Morning

A Reason to get up in the Morning is an irreverent, and sometimes hilarious memoir which he called a petite histoire. Rentschler was not a general or a superstar (not an Acheson, a Kennan, or a Harriman) but rather a "non-commissioned officer" during the heyday of the Cold War. This is not an account of how Cold War policies were formulated in Washington but rather a view of how they were carried out in the field by one dedicated career foreign service officer. It is, so to speak, a view from the trenches, a view far different from what was often reported in The New York Times and The Washington Post.
