Publisher Description
From the “preeminent historian of Reconstruction” (New York Times Book Review), an updated abridged edition of Reconstruction, the prize-winning classic work on the post-Civil War period which shaped modern America.
Reconstruction chronicles the way in which Americans—black and white—responded to the unprecedented changes unleashed by the war and the end of slavery. It addresses the quest of emancipated slaves’ searching for economic autonomy and equal citizenship, and describes the remodeling of Southern society; the evolution of racial attitudes and patterns of race relations; and the emergence of a national state possessing vastly expanded authority and one committed, for a time, to the principle of equal rights for all Americans.
This “masterful treatment of one of the most complex periods of American history” (New Republic) remains the standard work on the wrenching post-Civil War period—an era whose legacy still reverberates in the United States today.

A short history of reconstruction
Well written history that needs to be broadly told and understood in order to understand many of today’s political and economic events. Often quite anecdotal; more quantitative data would have further fortified the author’s robust theses.
Need a proofreader
I'm on page 78 so I can't give my thoughts on the whole work yet. So far it's interesting and informative and I expect that to continue so I'm giving 4 stars. I am very surprised by the many grammatical and spelling errors so far though. Is there a corrected version?
Excellent Book, Terrible Typos
Foner's work is fantastic, and you don't need my review to tell you that. I am very disappointed, however, in the ridiculous number of typos littered throughout this eBook edition (at least one every other page!) From mixing up R's and B's to forgetting the second quotation mark, this product is an embarrassment for whoever edited the eBook. Fortunately, publishers have the ability to issue "updates" to fix typos, and I hope they take the time to do so.
