Popular working-class boy, Mark Salinger keeps his feelings for the wealthy, but scorned, Rory Pearson, hidden. The powerful clique that runs their school, Ambrose Finch Academy, would cold-shoulder him if they knew. 

At a Halloween dance, their secret gets out and the Squad decides to teach them a lesson. The prank goes too far  and puts Rory and Mark into a coma.  

While the Squad schemes to cover their butts, Rory and Mark regain consciousness and try to get help, unaware their bodies are in a coma. They get separated and Rory finds herself in a place called Ravine, a place beset by poisons, cunning monsters and a Goblin Hunter by the name of Maigret. Making her way back to Mark will take every ounce of courage she has. And she hasn't got much.
