A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
Another thrilling domestic suspense novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Couple Next Door and Not a Happy Family
“A Stranger in the House will have you sleeping with the lights on for weeks.” —Bustle
“Smart and suspenseful. . . you'll never see the ending coming.” —PureWow
In this neighborhood, danger lies close to home.
Karen and Tom Krupp are happy—they’ve got a lovely home in upstate New York, they’re practically newlyweds, and they have no kids to interrupt their comfortable life together. But one day, Tom returns home to find Karen has vanished—her car’s gone and it seems she left in a rush. She even left her purse—complete with phone and ID—behind.
There's a knock on the door—the police are there to take Tom to the hospital where his wife has been admitted. She had a car accident, and lost control as she sped through the worst part of town.
The accident has left Karen with a concussion and a few scrapes. Still, she’s mostly okay—except that she can’t remember what she was doing or where she was when she crashed. The cops think her memory loss is highly convenient, and they suspect she was up to no good.
Karen returns home with Tom, determined to heal and move on with her life. Then she realizes something’s been moved. Something’s not quite right. Someone’s been in her house. And the police won't stop asking questions.
Because in this house, everyone’s a stranger. Everyone has something they’d rather keep hidden. Something they might even kill to keep quiet.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Waking up in hospital with no recollection of how you got there would be thoroughly terrifying. That’s how this twisty thriller starts, and the tension and confusion never let up. Karen is told she was in a car accident after leaving home in a panic. But is she actually amnesiac? And is there any connection to the murder in the neighborhood? Who can Karen trust when she’s not even certain she can trust herself? Shari Lapena whips suspicion, subterfuge, a clueless detective, and a few curveballs together to make a truly captivating read.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
At the start of this well-plotted if workmanlike thriller from bestseller Lapena (The Couple Next Door), the cops can't figure out what upstate New York housewife and bookkeeper Karen Krupp was doing in the sketchiest part of town before running a red light and smashing her Honda Civic headfirst into a utility pole and neither can Karen, who comes to in the hospital with no memory of that night beyond an underlying feeling of dread. But with the discovery of a murdered man just blocks from the scene, bells start to sound for detectives Rasbach and Jennings, setting in motion an investigation that quickly threatens to expose some unsavory secrets beneath the cozy suburban life Karen and her husband of two years, Tom, have constructed for themselves not to mention the downright creepy activities of the couple's intrusive neighbor, Brigid, who's Karen's putative best friend. Though the characters pack all the emotional heft of the glossy shelter magazines Karen collects, plentiful plot twists through the final page make this a diverting page-turner.

Emotional rollercoaster
Definitely had many ups and downs with major twists, great story.
Amazing
It really kept me guessing
I hate inconclusive books
Well written with a tightly thought through plot but the ending somehow skipped over in an unsatisfactory way
