In this true-life story, David Zailer travels to Colorado to speak at a conference where he encounters a challenging new friend: Mark. Their strong personalities and differing opinions provoked anger between them. Nevertheless, they chose to stay in touch and became best friends.

When terminal cancer strikes Mark years later, he becomes the man on the stretcher; David becomes one of his stretcher-bearers. As Mark's earthly life slowly draws to a close, they explore the deeper depths of friendship and faith together. In an unexpected turn after Mark's death, David also becomes the man on the stretcher. As Mark had before him, David faces the question: How do you live when you know you will someday die? And learns the answer.
