Publisher Description

After the death of her mother, Abby Faye is raised by her maternal grandparents on a primitive farm, in a rural, sparsely populated community. During the years following the Depression, their lives are difficult, but simple. Abby is taught to make-do with what they have, and she learns her lessons as she works alongside her Grandmother. Abby is isolated from the outside world, but she receives love and kindness from both of her grandparents.

One day, a strange young man comes and asks for a place to sleep and eat, in exchange for work. He offers a hand in doing chores and field work. Charlie becomes an important part of their lives, especially when events occur that require him and Abby to take on the tasks to run both the household and farm.

Abby's world is complicated by her new responsibilities and the requirement to attend the new grade school down the road. She is forced to leave her childhood behind and any dreams for her future seem hidden down a long uncertain path.
