Rats in a maze
That’s how we felt trying to keep track of all the leads, clues, red herrings, and misdirects that Campling salts the plot with. More than previous books, this one has a cobweb of a plot that involves the reader as an accomplice to Dan in trying out all the strands.
The only weakness I felt was the few glimpses into the murderer’s disorganized mind. A book in 3rd person gets diverted by 1st person plottings.
Still this novel engaged our minds and caught us up in the whodunnit sooner than any others. When did the murder happen? Who had motive? How will everyone die — I’ll reveal that just about everyone feels threatened here and almost all fall under suspicion. Even the reader is an Accomplice to the murder.
