The novel is set in 19th century New York City. The storyline consists of a wealthy, older gentleman living with a nephew and niece. The nephew is a dastardly and conniving man, intent upon acquiring the wealth of his uncle. To that end, he had the uncle’s son kidnapped as a small child and seeks to estrange his cousin from the uncle’s affections with an eye toward being his uncle’s sole heir. Will he manage to accomplish his mind breaking plan and is it worth of it?
