Publisher Description

"For the rest, however, we know full well that Marcion makes his gods unequal: one judicial, harsh, mighty in war; the other mild, placid, and simply good and excellent…"

Against Marcion is one of the most complete apologetic works from which we can gain a full account of Gnosticism in the Early Church. Marcionism, itself, was not Gnosticism formally, however it was shown to be so functionally in its doctrine. Like Gnosticism, Marcionites advocated a fundamental duality in their cosmogony. This meant an opposition of two equal powers: good and evil; this battle itself underlies the world and is necessary according to Marcion. In this text, Tertullian's ability to eloquently defend the historic Faith against the tossing waves of heresy is demonstrated.
