Publisher Description
“A moody, atmospheric thriller perfectly crafted.”—Charlie Donlea, USA Today bestselling author of Twenty Years Later.
A dark new thriller perfect for fans of Megan Miranda and Shari Lapena where murder exposes the dark secrets at the center of a group of friends and sets two women – one with a traumatic past, the other a Boston police detective – on a hunt for truth.
Snow falls softly outside Molly Bradley’s home on a frigid January night. Inside, half a dozen close friends are gathered to celebrate the fortieth birthday of Molly’s psychologist husband, Jay. Candlelight gleams against dark wood, wine flows, and the house rings with laughter. Everybody loves Jay, Molly most of all. Yet next morning, Molly discovers Jay dead on the floor of his office, his throat brutally slashed.
After decades working with the Boston PD, Detective Rita Myers has grown accustomed to the banality of evil—the murders that make no sense beyond bad luck or a tragic brush with the worst of humanity. But Jay Bradley’s murder isn’t random, or a mere crime of opportunity. Rita is convinced that someone in the couple’s small circle killed him. Someone who was celebrating with them that night.
Devastated, Molly tries to make sense of her husband’s death. Jay was her rock, the only person who really understood the nightmare she lived through long ago. He knew the horrors she’s kept hidden even from her friends. But shocking revelations are making her question if Jay was all he seemed to be—and whether someone else knows her past too. And until Molly figures out who she can really trust, she won’t be able to stop herself becoming the next target . . .

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
An inexplicable murder kicks off Parlato's gripping debut. The day after psychologist Jay Bradley celebrates his 40th birthday with his wife, Molly, and three other couples at their home in Graybridge, Mass., Molly finds Jay dead on his garage office floor with his throat slit, the beginnings of a new book, Abnormal Psychology and the Criminal Mind, open on his computer. Det. Rita Meyers of the Graybridge PD focuses her search for answers on the three couples, as well as Molly, who fears that someone has learned of a terrible secret from her past and her real identity. When the police discover that a young woman went missing six months earlier near the vacation home belonging to Jay's family in Mountclair, N.H., they suspect her disappearance may be tied to Jay's murder and his new book. Tension builds as the action alternates between the first-person narratives of Rita and Molly, who winds up kidnapped and held hostage. Assured pacing matches accomplished characterizations. Parlato is off to a strong start.

Great thriller!
I understand this is the author debut novel, well done! You definitely know how to tell a story. Molly and Jay have most of their good friends over to celebrate Jay’s 40th birthday. Molly retires as everyone is about to leave. Jay wants to work a bit in his garage office on his book about killers, an interest he has being a psychologist and his father and grandfather’s story of the Boston Strangler also fascinated him. Come morning something is off, doesn’t feel right to Molly. No scent of coffee, no Jay in kitchen. She looks for him in his office and finds him dead, his throat slit.
Detective Rita Myers is on the scene, going with her instincts she believes that it was someone Jay knew, someone that was at the party.
Will keep you guessing, plus there’s another mystery to be solved, but are they related? The growth and determination with Molly to find her husband’s killer and to deal with her past history of being a victim was riveting. The audio narrators were very good. The only thing was with so many characters, I did rewind to keep them straight. In that respect a book is better, but overall I throughly enjoyed the story.
