Publisher Description
For several years, ever since gaining independence from the former Soviet Union, the country of Ukraine has undergone change. The early years of independence brought political reform and better living standards but corruption and criminal activity became rife and then there was the scandal of young women being duped into travelling abroad, ostensibly for work, but finding themselves ensnared in a ring of prostitution. In protest to this trafficking FEMEN was born.
Modern day borders are porous and due to the possible inclusion of Ukraine within the European Union, state authorities need cross border agreements to monitor the movements of citizens. Anita, an M.I.6. employee, is sent to Ukraine to discuss possibilities with her opposite number as a prelude to a more formal agreement. Whilst she is in Kiev a FEMEN protest takes place and some of the women are arrested on the orders of the President.
One such protester is Katja, the daughter of Anita’s opposite number in the Ukraine Secret Service and a telephone call to her during her meeting with Anita sets of a chain of events that spread far beyond Ukraine’s borders, to the Swiss Alps and to Amsterdam. All is not as it seems though, vested interest, political manoeuvrings and the shadow of the Russian bear conspires to cloud events, the real purpose of the arrests hidden deep in the minds of powerful individuals.
