The Tragedy of America (by Dreiser) made a strong and painful accusation against capitalist society through the emergence and disillusionment of Clyde’s “American Dream”, formation and development of the egoist outlook on life and hedonic thoughts, his depression, struggle, degeneration and destruction. The tragedy is not so much a tragedy of personality and humanity, as it is a tragedy of an era and a country based on egoism.
