Davian has won a victory for the Augurs, but treachery surrounds him and his allies on all sides in the second book of the acclaimed Licanus Trilogy, in which "fans of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson will find much to admire." (The Guardian)
Following a devastating attack, an amnesty has been declared for all Augurs -- finally allowing them to emerge from hiding and openly oppose the dark forces massing against the land of Andarra.
The Augur Davian and his new allies hurry north toward the ever-weakening Boundary, but fresh horrors along their path suggest that their reprieve may have come far too late.
The new Northwarden, his ally in the Capital, contends with assassins and politicians and uncovers a dangerous secret. Meanwhile, their compatriot Asha begins a secret investigation into the disappearance of the Shadows.
And Caeden races against time to fulfill a treacherous bargain, but as more and more of his memories return, he begins to realize that the two sides in this ancient war may not be as clear-cut as they first seemed. . .
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
This weighty epic fantasy sequel to The Shadow of What Was Lost finds the heroes preparing to take on the forces massing beyond the magical boundary wall that protects the land of Andarra. Wirr, the newly minted Northwarden, and his friends Davian, a magic-wielding augur, and Asha, a corrupted augur known as a Shadow, have their hands full convincing anyone to take the threat seriously. Wirr has repealed the laws that condemned augurs to death, but many in Andarra still distrust those who use magic, especially the ones who are hiding unseemly secrets. Caeden, an amnesiac young man Wirr and Davian saved from a death sentence, is finally regaining his memories, and he struggles to deal with the unpleasant truths they contain. Asha needs to investigate the suspicious disappearance of other Shadows, and Davian is learning to control his growing powers, but the threat at the wall eventually forces everyone to drop their other plans and meet the enemy. Islington's magic-soaked setting has plenty of opportunities for conflict between competing powers even as earth-shattering evil approaches. Epic fantasy fans will enjoy this dense, suspenseful adventure.

Pretty good. Better than the first novel. Still...
The novel drags at times, keeping it from anything that I would call a page-turner. I mostly enjoyed reading it, though.
My rating system:
5 stars are reserved for books that totally blow me away, or classics that I believe would have when they were new. I don’t give too many of these out, because it’s the highest rating that you could ever possibly give any book on here.
4 stars for books that I would recommend to just about anyone, or, at least, to someone who doesn’t dislike the genre.
3 stars for books that I would only recommend to someone who is fond of the genre.
2 stars for books that I would be hesitant to recommend to anyone at all, but the book was not a total disaster.
1 star for books that I found so terribly ridiculous, or poorly written, that I wish I had not spent time reading to begin with.
Great book
Unbelievably awesome book! Loved all the characters and a great second book to the series!
A poor Wheel of Time copy
The first book was reasonably entertaining but started to tail off towards the end. This book continues that and really ramps up the vaguely chaotic jumps in character perspective, information, and flow. You also start to really see the almost direct copy of major features from The Wheel of Time. The biggest problem for me is just the lack of world building and structure, and overall cohesiveness of the storyline. Otherwise it does have an interesting plot, just not enough time or world building to see it through.
