This disappointing Amish romance from Good (His Unexpected Amish Twins) centers on a woman finding unexpected love. After the death of 19-year-old Sovilla Mast's father, she is sent to live with her Englischer aunt, Wilma. Once Sovilla arrives, stern and demanding Wilma forces her to work at a farmers market. There, Sovilla meets Isaac—an identical twin from a large family who doesn't speak because he has a severe stutter. The two develop a friendship as they learn more about each other's burdens. Isaac's brothers, Sovilla's cousins, and aunt Wilma all prove to be remarkably cruel, and the level of verbal abuse and meanness described can be overpowering. The characters tend toward the simplistic and their motivations are often questionable, as when Sovilla is shockingly quick to forgive Wilma. The one-note secondary characters don't do the narrative any favors, either. The romance between Sovilla and Isaac, which unfolds sweetly under the pressure of their families, is the only ray of light. Fans of Amish romances can pass on this one.

Loved this sweet book!
An Unexpected Amish Courtship is Rachel Good's sweet story of several couples and friendships, with the primary protagonist being Sovilla, who for family financial reasons was sent to live a maiden aunt in Pennsylvania. Sovilla missed her family, her beau, and the future she had planned. As if that were not challenging enough, the aunt is a bear to live with! She is grumpy and bitter, and Sovilla cannot seem to break through her defenses.Will Sovilla be able to adapt to her new lifestyle? Will she be able to help her aunt's heart soften, or help her new friend Isaac with his stuttering problem? This not just an Amish romance story, though there are a couple of those that develop! But there are also suspenseful twists and turns that relate to family secrets. There is one crumudgeon, Uncle Lloyd, who seems bent on controlling everyone's lives, letting the chips fall where they may. I will not give away what happens to him. But this was a very sweet and satisfying book., with well-developed and empathic characters (Except for Uncle Lloyd!) I look forward to reading more of Good's books in the future!
