USA Today Bestseller!
“Julie Anne Long reinvents the historical romance for modern readers.” —Amanda Quick
From USA Today bestselling author Julie Anne Long comes the second book in an exciting new historical romance series, the first since her beloved Pennyroyal Green series.
He has devil’s blood in his veins. At least, that’s always been the legend. How else could the Duke of Brexford’s notorious bastard son return from the dead? The brutal decade since Lucien Durand, Lord Bolt, allegedly drowned in the Thames forged him into a man who always gets what—and who—he wants. And what he wants is vengeance for his stolen birthright . . . and one wild night in Angelique Breedlove’s bed.
Angelique recognizes heartbreak when the enigmatic Lord Bolt walks into The Grand Palace on the Thames, and not even his devastating charm can tempt her to risk her own ever again. One scorching kiss drives home the danger.
But in the space between them springs a trust that feels anything but safe. And the passion—explosive, consuming—drives Lucien to his knees. Now his whole life depends on proving his love to a woman who doesn’t believe in it . . . because his true birthright, he now knows, is guardian of Angelique Breedlove’s heart.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
The delightful second regency romance in the Palace of Rogues series (after Lady Derring Takes a Lover) returns to the converted London boardinghouse that once was the Palace of Rogues, but shifts focus onto co-owner Angelique Breedlove. Angelique's determination to build a respectable reputation is threatened when the notoriously rakish Lucien Durand, who has been presumed dead for 10 years, requests a room at the Palace. Lucien has returned to London to seek revenge on those who drove him away, but he becomes more invested in Angelique and the other inhabitants of the boarding house than in revisiting his past. Angelique and Lucien are sides of a coin, both seeking to overcome shadowy pasts but with vastly different approaches. The growing relationships between the illegitimate Lucien and his legitimate half-brother and between Angelique and her clumsy maidservant add depth to the story, while Long's focus on the lives of the middle-class lodgers at the Palace is refreshing. Readers will enjoy this rich depiction of how the past informs but does not dictate the future.

Fun to the last drop!
Enchanting.
The best ROMANCE book I’ve read.....
I anxiously waited for this book since the first in this series came out and it was absolutely worth the wait!
Lucien, while completely different than I imagined, was absolutely perfect for Angelique. I laughed so hard in some parts I had tears streaming down my cheeks and in other parts the tears were from heartbreak and kinship.
The author truly understands pain and regret and the futility of pride. She also conveys romance better than anyone else I have ever read.
This will be the standard for all other romance novels and I sincerely hope that there are more books in this series!
So. Slow.
I usually fly through (and reread) JAL’s books, but this series is so painstakingly slow I have to force myself to get through it. The characters have none of the sparkle or depth seen in her other books (I see some recycled exchanges/sentiments, but they now ring hollow). And while the writing is fine, this boarding house setting is making me claustrophobic.
