In Book I of the Triumvirate Chronicles, a group of immortals were introduced, their history long lost to the galaxy. Genesis tells the tale of how a group of men and women were experimented upon to turn them into immortals by transforming them into cyborgs, 110 000 years before the events described in Desperation.
