Anything Goes

A mature, home-schooled teenager was houseguest for a few weeks before she was to go on to university. We had a number of conversations on a variety of subjects.


One day discussing evolution, I, already a grandmother of some years standing, suggested the possibility that mutations in the past might have occurred not singly, but a number at once. That missing links between various apes and humans might not exist. A female ape might have found herself mother of as different a creature as a hen would ducklings, or a dog, kittens.


Thoughtfully she said, “I wouldn’t want to be that mother.”

It was with dismay I realized my mistake in making that particular suggestion to one so young. Fortunately however—though I know not with how much anxiety beforehand—the young woman married and in due time became the mother of two fine, healthy boys.


The idea itself over time evolved into the following, as a possible solution God or Nature might devise to correct the many transgressions of humankind committed over past decades.
