Great Response to Postmodernism

Apostolic Identity in a Postmodern World offers a bible-based response to new postmodern values of our day, along with relevant teaching and instruction for Apostolics who are are called to share the gospel in “such a time as this.”

It’s important to understand that David Bernard has not written this book as one project over one subject that is thoroughly discussed. Rather, it should be known that this is a collection of articles, sermons, and excerpts from books the author has written previously and organized in such a way that is helpful with respect to the topic of postmodernism. The articles were written for Pentecostal Life (formerly Pentecostal Herald) magazine. Many of the sermons were preached at the General Conference of the United Pentecostal Church International. Excerpts from previous books are from several volumes of Bernard’s popular Pentecostal Theology Series and other works.

While it has not been written with the flow that an author tackling the subject as one project might have, this book will prove quite helpful to any Apostolic reader due to David Bernard’s willingness to address new topics that have arisen, and his trusted ability to wield scripture effectively in his points. It is certainly hard to capture all of the ground the writer covers, which you can easily see with a quick survey of chapter titles. You will find Apostolic answers on important subjects in the postmodern era, such as: truth, diversity, doctrinal errors, apostolic identity, and the advantage that an apostolic church has in reaching people born and raised in the time that the postmodern ideology arrived.

To read through this book will leave the reader with a better understanding of the different worldview that postmodernism brings with it, and how we can address that perspective and reach those who have adopted it. It will also give a solid ground of scripture for the saint to stand on regarding the challenging, fresh topics of the day. David Bernard gives answers that point us to scripture and encourage us to press on with doctrine that was meant for the day we live in.

I can see this book being a handy resource for those with prominent questions or those who wish to teach or preach on subjects that individual chapters discuss. I give this new Bernard work a 4/5 stars.
