Publisher Description

National bestselling author E. E. Knight revisits the Vampire Earth to tell a tale about David Valentine’s fellow freedom fighter Ahn-Kha....

Captured and sold to the Kurian-allied Maynes Conglomerate to work as a slave in the coal mines of Appalachia, Ahn-Kha is angered and appalled by the dangerous working conditions and the brutal treatment inflicted upon his fellow miners.

When a protest against shortages is deliberately and bloodily suppressed, Ahn-Kha sets himself against the ruling Maynes family and sets out on a trail of vengeance through the Coal Country.

The people of the Coal Country now have a leader—a powerful and battle-hardened leader determined to forge them into an army that will wage guerrilla warfare against the Maynes family and their Kurian masters—and free the Appalachians from their tyranny....

Slight improvement...

I have read the entire Vampire Earth series and the first four books, I'm my opinion, we're great. However, everything after has just been so monotonous. Appalachian Overthrow was an improvement but I keep waiting for something more. I want to know more about The Kurians, reapers, lifeweavers, etc. it's just the same battle stories and boring details about equipment. The last five books could have been condensed to two. I feel invested in the story but find myself continually disappointed and forcing myself to continue because I am invested. I don't know but if the story continues it may go on without me. Ten books and this is where we stand? The author needs to step it up or wrap it up!

MISSING LARGE BLOCKS OF TEXT

Sadly, an otherwise enjoyable book appears to be missing significant blocks of text. Actual pieces of the book are missing.

Here is one example. (I'm reading on a 3rd gen iPad, portrait mode, so page numbers are relative to this platform.)

On page 202, in the chapter "New Arrivals", there is a scene of the miners digesting the news of a minor but loved character, Aym. They are discussing her death, and are angry but not yet taking or even proposing concrete steps. Suddenly, the text switches to what turns out to be the middle of a segment describing what one deduces to be the miners' revolt, the miners having already taken possession of the mine and hostages. The text subsequently makes reference to events likely described in the missing block of text.

There are other such gaps subsequent to the one I've just described, but I've lost my enthusiasm for tracking down each one and listing it.

My copy of the book has 318 pages. Likely, there should be more.

Since E.E. Knight has previously had a great track record, I'd prefer to believe that this error somehow results from a flawed download of the book to my device or a flawed upload from the publisher to the iBookstore. But I honestly have to wonder whether these errors crept in before the book was finalized and uploaded.

If you've enjoyed previous books in this series, you'll probably enjoy this one. I did. But I simply can't bring myself to give more than a single star to a book that hasn't been delivered to me in its entirety. It's really irritating!
