Publisher Description
Samantha—the fashionable wife of a successful businessman and doting mother of one—struggles to negotiate the spheres of intimacy between her husband and her family of origin. Samantha loves her husband, Richard, and she loves her sister, Elizabeth. But the two of them can barely exist in the same room, which has caused the entire family years of emotional distress. Yet it’s not until Samantha’s sister is diagnosed at age forty-three with lung cancer that her family and her marriage are tipped into full-blown crisis.
A story of love, loss, forgiveness, learning to live with grief, and healing, Appearances will resonate with anyone who has ever experienced tension in their familial relationships—even as it serves as a poignant reminder that no amount of privilege can protect us from family conflicts, marital difficulty, or mortality.

Definitely a tear jerker. I loved the book right up until the end. The ending left me wanting.
Good story but where was the editor?
Although the writer thanks her editor, one has to wonder if she slept during the final reading of the manuscript? Were there any copyeditors assigned to this project at all? The story is a good one, especially if you have, or know someone who has, been through any of the gut-wrenching circumstances this family has endured. But the distraction of the typos, an entire section being repeated mid-paragraph at the very end, some badly constructed paragraphs that I suspect were the result of cut-and-paste were jarring. It reads like a self-published manuscript, and, perhaps it is, I didn’t check. I received it as a free issue through Book Bub, and as they say, you get what you pay for.
A book of loss & letting go
This was a deeply spiritual book & a difficult book to read in many ways. But I am glad that I found it.
