Josephine Preston Peabody was an American writer of verse dramas and of poetry that ranged from precise, ethereal verse to works of social concern. One of her most famous works became the collection “Old Greek Folk Stories Told Anew”, published in 1894, included the fanciest versions of the most interesting myths.


“Arachne” is the legend about the maiden named Arachne, who was known throughout the country for her skill as a weaver. She was as nimble with her fingers as Calypso; as untiring as Penelope, the Odysseus’s wife; so talented and confident, that one day she challenged Athena, goddess of wisdom and crafts, to compete with by the weaver masterpiece…
