Publisher Description
This book is an effort to preserve and pass on the beauty of proper liturgical music in the tradition of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of the Greek Orthodox Church. The book contains a brief introduction to the history of Byzantine music, 107 exercises with analysis of the various characters, a page devoted to the theory of each mode, and audio examples to accompany the material found in the book. The text is written in the English language while all of the original Greek terms are preserved with an English transliteration for those not able to read Greek.
Customer Reviews
Audio is embedded!
I didn’t initially purchase the book because the description fails to indicate that the audio is embedded and someone else stated he couldn’t find them. The GOArch website says this digital copy has the audio, so I bought it and was not disappointed.
Excellent
This book is beautiful. If you want to learn Orthodox chant, this is the place to start. If you want access to the music of ancient Christianity, this will open that door. Bravo!
Cannot find audio clips
Audio clips are essential to learning music. In fact, this book is worthless without them. It claims I need to turn my iPad to landscape mode to access them, but it is already on landscape mode.
While I love psaltic art, I can not recommend this book beyond a theoretical introduction to the subject.
