A rogue air force general, the evil Caesar Russell, has other plans, however. During a visit by the president of the United States, Russell and his band of elite mercenaries capture Area 7. Their aim: kill the president, take over the country and use the Sinovirus to poison all but members of the white race. But Marine Capt. Shane Schofield isn't going to let that happen. With his usual mix of unflagging bravery and superhuman strength Schofield starred in Reilly's 1999 American debut Ice Station the relentless Marine and his tight group of highly competent sidekicks battle Russell on land, water and in space. As is Reilly's style, the action moves at a scenery-blurring pace, and his third novel (following last year's Temple) can make for exhausting reading. He employs just about every tactic both clever and crude to keep the suspense afloat. Character development is nil, and dialogue is at times comic-strip bad. Yet the sheer frenzy of Reilly's approach can inspire awe. How many heroes, after all, can kill an enemy aboard the space shuttle in outer space, then return to earth and dispatch another foe by pushing him into a pool full of meat-eating Komodo dragons all over the course of less than an hour? A Bit Familiar
I loved without question his first book, Ice Station. This one was very good, but it didn't have quite the same 'draw you in' sort of effect. It also felt a bit like deja vu in terms of the storyline, the characters' last minute heroics, etc. Still, definitely a good read and worth the purchase. I'm sure I'll read another of his books in the future.
Incredible, Thrilling, Ride Page by Page!
I actually received this book as a gift from a veteran, now a lifelong friend, while serving in the armed forces in the good ol' USA. I read the book in two days as I simply could not put it down for the life of me. When I read the prologue, I had an inkling that the book was going to be a worthy story. I've come to understand that authors who blend historic, fact or fiction, into their writing are generally well educated, hence write extremely well. This author fits that mold perfectly. The manner in which the author describes each scene is hands-down astounding. Not only is every scene easily imagined in the mind's eye, the narrative is focused, on point, and does not deviate to leave the reader thinking, "what just happened?" The narrative just flows and flows without hitting rapids to be endured by those holding the oars, readers in this case. The action is a nonstop thrill ride from point A to point B, and sometimes all the way to Z, without missing a beat. The characters are well developed, the twists and turns of the plot are easy to traverse, and although those last-minute saves can viewed as nothing short of miraculous, they are not impossibilities. I'd really like to give many details of the content of this excellent novel, but I never write a spoiler review to ruin a book for others to read, so I will simply end with "buy the book, you will not be disappointed." Cheers to Mr. Reilly for the exciting ride through Area 7!
Fantastic
This book was amazing, enough said, but there were just some moments where the most ridiculous thing would appear, or save scarecrow. For example. "A Komodo dragon popped up and saved schofield!" That just made me put the book down and sit back in my seat, thinking "who writes this kind of stuff?" But overall this is a story I could visualize, and remember for a long time. Just like all the other books.
