Publisher Description

Need a mage killed? Verve's got you covered.

As a member of the holy order of Atal's Chosen, Verve lives by the edge of her hematite blade. Trained from childhood to stand tall against the warring mage clans, Verve won't let anyone else's family die at magic's cruel hands.

So when Verve's patron tasks her with taking out a notorious mage leader, she knows her skills are up to the challenge. Sure enough, Verve lands a cover-job right in the heart of her target's territory. The coin's not great, but protecting the locals makes for the perfect camouflage while she hunts for her true target. What's more, the handsome local barkeep Alem seems to know more than he's letting on about the mage she's looking for.

Against all common sense, Verve discovers a cause worth fighting for in the village. But living by the blade means dying by it too, and when Verve's powerful patron learns of the life she's found and her growing change of heart, she gives Verve an ultimatum: Kill the mage or be hunted by her own fellow Chosen. Verve is forced to choose a side or risk losing her new found family, the life she didn't know she wanted… and a man she didn't know she could love.

The only way out of this mess is to die… or find magic of her own.

Step into the breathtaking world of magic and mayhem that is the Chaos Moon LGBTQ+ fantasy romance series. But beware: if you love badass bi heroines, rivals to lovers, and slow-burn steamy romances, Assassin's Mercy will heal your heart and become your new obsession. Don't say you weren't warned.

Magic, mystery, murder???? (For hire)

[NB: I received this book as an ARC and I am leaving my honest review]

Oh god I love this book. I’ve been reading Garcia’s stuff since her first book in her first series, Catalyst Moon: Incursion. She’s an amazing author whose magical worlds and characters will grab you by the coat collar and not let go. Assassin’s Mercy is the first book in a spin-off series, Chaos Moon, taking place a few hundred years after the events of the Catalyst Moon series. People with magical capabilities—aka mages—are hunted down and generally reviled. Verve is a highly trained assassin who specializes in hunting mages, thanks to mage-induced* childhood trauma and years of propaganda and conditioning by her guardian, Danya. But like any good story, a wrench is thrown into the works—a wrench named Alem who is hot, smart, kind—and a mage.
Dun dun dunnnnnn!
Did you watch or read Game of Thrones but get tired of the rampant misogyny, violence against women as entertainment, and how every setting was basically “England circa 1100 AD?” Are you ever like “this fantasy world wants me to accept that people can shapeshift into turtles and fly but somehow, LGQTBA+ characters who AREN’T cariacatures, or immediately shoved aside, is a bridge too far????” Then you will like Assassin’s Mercy (and the Catalyst Moon series). We have men and women fighting and working side by side as a matter of course—when people dump on Verve it’s not because she’s a woman doing a “man’s” job. A bunch of other women are doing that job too! They dump on her because of her drinking, or her killing mages, or because she’s part of an ethnic minority that was suppressed through genocide and persecution. Do you sometimes get tired of how “assassin with a heart of gold” stories are like “this assassin never actually kills people even though they’re supposedly so great at it?” Verve definitely earns the right to call herself a great assassin. Girlfriend’s got more issues than a Time magazine subscription and I love her for it. Have you ever wanted to see non-england-circa-1100AD settings in the fantasy realm? Let me tell how excited I was when I clocked that Verve was traveling through basically Florida at one point. Swamps! Alligators! Something new and different, finally!
Anyway, make a good decision for once in your life and go read this book. You’re welcome.
