Publisher Description

Assertiveness is often presented as an unequivocally desirable quality: the ability to say no, express an opinion, protect personal boundaries and communicate emotions without aggression. This account is useful but incomplete. Assertive behaviour always occurs toward a particular person, within a particular relationship, and under conditions shaped by norms, status and possible consequences.

This paper develops the original question about the advantages and disadvantages of assertiveness into a model in which assertiveness is understood as a trainable, situational interpersonal competence. Literature available by 2011 shows that assertive behaviour can be strengthened through modelling, rehearsal, coaching and feedback, while also demonstrating that its social reception depends on context.

Assertiveness can increase agency and communicative clarity yet still produce relational costs, particularly under power asymmetry or strong social expectations. Mature assertiveness training should therefore develop not only self-expression but also situational discrimination, empathy, risk appraisal and behavioural flexibility.

The 2026 edition develops the conceptual framework and critical analysis while retaining a historical literature cutoff of 2011.
