An understanding of the quantum physics of atoms, nuclei and particles underlies the technology that surrounds us every day – from the manufacture of computer chips to the fabrication of the tiny lasers that are used in DVD players. It also lies at the heart of photovoltaic cells used for solar power, nuclear fission used in current power stations, and in future ‘clean’ nuclear fusion reactors that may one day supply almost limitless power.

This book includes two interactive activities. In the first you will explore the relationship between energy levels, quantum states and spectra. In the second you will use a slot machine that illustrates the way in which hadrons can be created from combinations of quarks and antiquarks.
