Publisher Description
The critically acclaimed book from the bestselling author of Losing the Race and The Power of Babel
John McWhorter is one of the most original and provocative thinkers on the issue of race in America today. In Authentically Black McWhorter argues that although African-Americans stress hard work and initiative in private, they have assumed the mantle of victimhood in the eyes of the public and have thereby created a distorted meaning of what it is to be "authentically black." McWhorter takes on this mentality and its debilitating implications—in topics ranging from rap music to the reparations movement, to the portrayal of African-Americans on television to racial profiling— injecting new ideas and a fresh approach into the nationwide debate on race. Authentically Black is a powerful and important book that will inform and influence the opinions of Americans across all racial and political spectra.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Much like the famed white silent majority conjured into existence a couple of decades back, this book's imagined audience is a middle class satisfied with its own achievements and wishing to separate itself from obstreperous complainers with more strident voices. Rejecting slavery reparations and affirmative action, the book repeatedly criticizes liberal commentators for badly fishing the data stream, while relying itself on torrents of anecdotal evidence. McWhorter, linguist turned social critic, may share Noam Chomsky's academic background but not his agenda: this book is starkly conservative and likely to please the anyone-can-make-it-if-they-want crowd of all colors. Empowering? Perhaps, if power's already your thing.

New tools for me
I have said to my conservative friends that many welfare programs of the left have failed, but at least the left recognizes there is a problem for the lowest classes. This is the first conservative writing I have seen that not only recognizes the problem but offers solution approaches. This book has given me tools to examine more critically programs offered to help folks.
I would be interested in John offering a post Obama addendum.
