Publisher Description
John Stuart Mill's Autobiography is both exceptional for the description of his unusual and extraordinary education, and for how honestly he treats the melancholy (or deep depression as we would call it today) he fell into in his early 20's. John Stuart Mill was one of the leading intellectuals of the 19th century, and he traces his early education, his moral and intellectual development, and the changes and challenges that lead him to the views he espoused. Spanning the course of his entire life, it contains one of the more touching descriptions of a person struggling to understand and live with emotion when one can reason all happiness away.

Clean updated editing
It is hard to figure out if the rating is for the book, or the edition of the book. In this case it is for the editor. I’ve been told for a long time that I had to read at least the first few chapters of this book in order to appear well rounded. As most homework sounding reading assignments, I put this off. I happy to have an Americanized edition with correct punctuation. The edition of previously missing chapters is quite nice as well. We get the whole book here, not just the sections approved by the exectutor of Mill’s will. I hope more works get this treatment.
