Excellent content, horrible ebook

Knopf owes everyone who bought the iBook an update. Even some names are garbled and scientific content is often not decipherable. The presence of gratuitous hyphens defeats search. This would be an acute embarrassment if it was done in print, why is it permitted in an ebook?
