Science Fiction meets M/M Romance
Octavia Atlas has masterfully woven together the realms of M/M romance and science fiction in an extraordinary universe. Rarely do readers encounter narratives where two Black protagonists take center stage, and Atlas's portrayal of Armando Medina is both groundbreaking and relatable. At the outset, Armando finds himself in a challenging place. As the story unfolds, he embarks on a remarkable journey of self-discovery, unveiling mysterious powers within himself. His narrative arc is a testament to courage, resilience, and the transformative power of the vulnerability in finding love. As Armando navigates his quest for truth amidst the shadows of his parents' untimely demise, readers find themselves deeply connected to his triumphs and tribulations, alternately cheering him on and urging him forward. Or scolding him for poor decisions.
Atlas's world-building prowess shines throughout the narrative, creating a captivating backdrop for Armando's odyssey. However, the book is not without its flaws, as pacing issues hinder the initial momentum of the story. While the front end of the novel showcases remarkable world-building. It suffers from a lackluster tone and sluggish storyline progression, which may deter some readers, particularly those less familiar with the science fiction genre. Despite these concerns, the latter part of the novel revitalizes the narrative with renewed vigor, bringing the first installment of the series to a satisfying conclusion.
