Backyard Animal Basics

The picturesque dream of a harmonious backyard menagerie often masks a grim reality. Many well-intentioned animal keepers, inspired by idyllic images, discover too late that forcing chickens, ducks, and rabbits into a shared space can lead to a biological disaster of disease, stress, and injury.

This book dismantles the romanticized myths of cohabitation. It provides a clear-eyed, practical guide grounded in the distinct biological and behavioral needs of each species. Readers will learn why a chicken's dust bath is a rabbit's respiratory nightmare, how a duck's need for water creates a lethal environment for others, and the specific nutritional dangers of cross-feeding that can lead to fatal organ damage.

Instead of a failed experiment, Backyard Animal Basics offers a blueprint for success: the zonal approach. The author details how to design and build separate, secure, and species-appropriate zones for living, feeding, and sleeping. It provides meticulous daily, weekly, and seasonal routines for creating a safe, low-stress property where all animals can thrive. Discover how to manage a multi-species yard with competence, turning the dream of a backyard flock into a sustainable and humane reality.
